Brewsday Tuesday: Parleaux Beer Lab's grand opening

Nora McGunnigle initiated the Brewsday Tuesday column four years ago and her final piece appeared in last week’s Gambit. Her knowledge and insight will be missed, but I hope to carry the torch and inform beer lovers of the latest beer news. I am a New Orleans native, a longtime homebrewer and longer-time consumer of good brews. I hope to bring a new perspective to beer and drinks writing in this space.

My first semi-official act in my new role was to attend the official grand opening of Parleaux Beer Lab this past Saturday. It’s located in Bywater — “par l’eau” being French for “by the water” — and offers a lineup of more than 10 beers, including tasty brews such as a lemongrass kolsch, an oatmeal stout and a hoppy copper ale.

Ever more hoppy beers are available from local brewers. Impressive new offerings such as Syncopation from NOLA Brewing Company and Jucifer from Gnarly Barley Brewing Company now join tasty dry-hopped versions of Louisiana favorites such as Parish Brewing Company’s Envie and Urban South Brewery’s Holy Roller IPA.

With several breweries recently opened and the release of new beers, this is an exciting time for beer drinkers in New Orleans. I hope to help spread the news like my esteemed predecessor. Don’t hesitate to say hello if you see me enjoying a pint around town. Cheers.
