At a benefit for Covenant House and Eden House April 9, "Cakeup for a Cause" organizers will collect toiletries and cosmetics for the groups which provide support to women, young people and children experiencing homelessness or who have been victims of human trafficking. Organizers Caitrin Gladow, Carolyn Scofield and Rachel Strassel are asking for travel size toiletries such as shampoos, deodorants and toothpaste; makeup samples; baby wipes; and individually wrapped pads and tampons.

Menstrual care items in particular can be a lifesaver for women in insecure situations — the products are expensive, and helping women gain access to them often is identified as a key problem by advocates for people who are homeless.

In addition to personal care supplies, event participants may also donate the makeup bags which often accompany beauty box subscription services such as Ipsy or Birchbox. They bags will be used to pack cosmetics. There also are makeovers by a professional makeup artist, and cake and cocktails will be served.

The event takes place from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday at Bakery Bar. It's free to attend.
