Uptown butcher shop Cleaver & Co. (3917 Baronne St., 504-227-3830) has closed.

The whole animal butchery and sandwich shop announced the shutter in a voicemail message to customers saying only that the store would close “effective immediately” and that business with the team’s food truck would continue at some point in the future.

Seth Hamstead and Simone Reggie opened the shop in 2012. Reggie eventually departed to work at the food delivery service Good Eggs, and she now owns the grocery Simone's Market on Oak Street. In 2015, Hamstead sold Cleaver & Co. to Nathaniel Wallace and his uncle Daniel Sinclair, who raise wagyu cattle on the Northshore.

In the past year, the team expanded their food menu and launched a food truck and pop-up events. What prompted the shutter was not clear, and an email to the owners was not immediately returned.
