Zeitgeist Summer Films

In the post-Miramax era of major "independent" releases, Zeitgeist Multi-disciplinary Arts Center has been the city's best venue for an independent filmmaker's idea of an independent film. And for anyone who'd like to see a movie that doesn't hit the multiplex the week after the promotional toy hits the fast food chains, Zeitgeist has been a breath of fresh air. But as the notion of independent films becomes ever more relative, Zeitgeist is presenting its own take on summer blockbusters. In other words, Zeitgeist is selling out, or hopes to sell out its August shows to offer some variety to local filmgoers and to support its summer programming. This week features both I Am a Sex Addict and 12 and Holding. Upcoming films include Steve Buscemi's recent Sundance Film Festival grand jury award-nominee Lonesome Jim and Michael Kang's award-winning debut feature The Motel. I Am a Sex Addict is Caveh Zahedi's docu-drama about his infatuation with prostitutes, which he tries to remedy as he's about to get married for the third time. It won the IFP Gotham Award for "Best Film Not Playing in a Theater Near You." Foreign-porn connoisseurs will enjoy a cameo by French porn star Rebecca Lord. At the other end of innocence is 12 and Holding, a film about a couple of boys dragged from the verge of adolescence straight to adulthood by the death of a friend. Tickets $6, $5 students/seniors, $4 members. -- Will Coviello
