You Are Here: Sculpture and Drawings by Christopher Saucedo

In the art world, you don't want to be a "lightweight." But you don't want to be too heavy, either. How to strike a balance? Influential UNO art instructor and postmodern sculptor Chris Saucedo takes a typically direct approach in this Barrister's show, with works such as Family Portrait in Exact Weight and Volume (above) in which he and his family are reproduced as penny weights of the sort used on old postal scales, here radically enlarged to reflect their cubic displacement in water. It's an appropriate analogy for a clan displaced when its home was flooded after the storm " an event that occurred some four years after the death of his New York firefighter brother in the 9/11 twin towers attack. In an uncertain world, Saucedo reduces life experience to geometry, simple forms that imply no end of complexity and paradox. — D. Eric Bookhardt
