Wine of the Week

Located just northeast of Rioja — Spain's most renowned wine area — Somontano lies at the foothills of the Pyrénées. A subregion of Aragon, Somontano is one of Spain's coolest grape-growing districts. A blend of 30 percent Chardonnay and 35 percent each GewÜrztraminer and old vine, late-harvest Macabeo, the wine was fermented and aged in stainless steel. A great find, this wallet-friendly, lively and versatile wine offers heady aromatics dominated by the GewÜrztraminer's exotic floral and crisp fruit notes. On the palate, this well-balanced wine shows citrus, tropical fruit and green apple flavors cascading into a long, satisfying finish. Made to drink young, it will taste fine over the next couple of years. It is a wonderfully refreshing aperitif and a good companion to tapas, seafood, flaky white fish, vegetables and spicy dishes. Where to buy it: Cork & Bottle, Swirl and Rouses in Uptown. Where to drink it: RioMar, Flaming Torch and Wolfe's in the Warehouse. (Listings current at press time.)
