Wine of the Week

Five Rivers' label featuring a goddess amid a starry sky is an eye-catcher, yet the wine makes more of an impression in the glass. Also noteworthy is Five Rivers' campaign during October, National Breast Cancer Awareness month. The winery and local distributors will donate $1 from each bottle sold during October to the National Breast Cancer Foundation, which will distribute it to local cancer-fighting organizations. This value-priced wine, a blend of 91 percent Cab, 5 percent Merlot and 2 percent each Malbec and Petite Verdot, is aged 11 months in small American and Hungarian oak barrels. Enticing aromas of ripe berry fruit with cedar notes beckon, followed by a vibrant fusion of cherry, plum and blackberry flavors. Well-balanced with soft tannins, good acid and an inviting fruit-forward character, it's good with rare steak, chops and hearty fare. Where to buy it: Most Winn-Dixie supermarkets, Langenstein's in Metairie, Dorignac's, all Breaux Marts and Rouse's. Where to drink it: Gumbo Shop, Embers Steak House, Tommy's Cuisine and L'Etoile in Covington. (Listings current at press time.)
