Wine of the Week

Eberle, who first became enamored with wine while in grad school at LSU, pioneered the introduction of the heralded Syrah Chapoutier clone in Paso Robles more than 20 years ago. This wine from Eberle's Steinbeck vineyard was aged 18 months, half in American and half in French oak. In the glass, enticing aromas of spice and peppery, black fruit with oaky overtones lead to a big, rich mouthful of wine with intense blackberry, currant and cherry flavors. Very well balanced with bright acidity and firm tannins. It drinks well in its youth but will continue to improve over the next five to eight years. A good match for smoked and roasted meats such as barbecue pork ribs and rack of lamb. Where to buy it: Swirl, Hopper's Wines and Spirits and Dorignac's. Where to drink it: Galatoire's, K-Paul's, Antoine's, Arnaud's and Tommy's Cuisine. (Listings current at press time.)
