Wine of the Week



ChileÕs Maule Valley ranks as the countryÕs largest wine region, with fine bottled renditions of the classic varietals such as this Merlot from Calina. The valleyÕs cooling coastal breezes, diverse soils and microclimates are home to many 200-year-old vines, making it one of the oldest wine-producing regions in Chile as well. A blend of 87 percent Merlot and 13 percent Cabernet Sauvignon, this medium-bodied wine ages in French oak for nine months. In the glass, the wine offers ripe plum aromas and violet scents, and it features dark cherries and blackberries, firm tannins and a balanced acidity on the palate. Drink now and over the next five to seven years. A good accompaniment to roast pork, pasta dishes, cheese, pizza, chicken and game birds.
