Wine of the Week

Nearly all of Washington's acclaimed Cabernets and Merlots are made with grapes sourced from the state's eastern growing region. Separated by the immense Cascade Mountain Range, the east consists of a dry, temperate climate amid a patchwork of fields, ranges, valleys, orchards and vineyards. Primarily Merlot with splashes of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cab Franc added for structure and roundness, the grapes for Red Diamond were fully ripened to develop varietal character. Aged in French and American oak for 10 months, this value-priced wine offers aromas of black cherry and spice with rich plum and berry flavors, a hint of cocoa, and chewy tannins and balanced acidity. A nice accompaniment to roast duck, osso bucco, lamb stew and beef ragout. Where to buy it: Vieux Carré Wine & Spirits, Dorignac's and Rouse's Supermarket #14. Where to drink it: Irene's Cuisine, Jacques-Imo's Café, Flaming Torch and Hookah Café. (Listings current at press time.)
