Wine of the Week

The annual celebratory release of Beaujolais Nouveau in France the third Thursday in November is perfect timing for the all-American Thanksgiving feast. After a healthy 2002 growing season, the hand-harvested traditional Gamay grapes are vinified in whole bunches followed by temperature-controlled maceration, pressing and fermentation. This very well-made wine yields fresh, fragrant aromas of strawberries, red cherries, and hints of raspberry. On the palate, the wine is supple and fleshy, well-balanced with rounded tannins, even-alcohol, with nice, bright fruit throughout and a medium long finish. A good accompaniment to most Thanksgiving faves. Available at Dorignac's, Langenstein's in Metairie, The Wine Seller, Cellars of River Ridge, Habano's in Slidell; and in Covington: Hugh's Wine Cellar, Northshore Wine Merchants and Louisiana Star.
