"Nice pick by @Jabari_Greer! #WhoDat?! #Saints"
That was Sen. David Vitter on Twitter Sept. 30, midway through the New Orleans Saints-Miami Dolphins matchup — and just hours before the federal government shut down over a budget impasse. Vitter's followers quickly snapped back at him with tweets like, "Nothing more important going on in DC tonight, huh?" and "GET BACK TO WORK."
But Louisiana's junior senator was undeterred. The next day, after the government had shut down and an estimated 800,000 federal employees had been furloughed, Vitter tweeted a photo of a Saints fan at the Superdome holding a sign that read "Shutdown? Only by the Saints' D."
"Pretty funny sign last night in the Dome," Vitter tweeted, adding, "Who Dat?!"
