It used to be women candidates whose appearance, rather than performance, was scrutinized in the political media. Last week, National Review reported that Gov. Bobby Jindal had gained 13 pounds "over the last few months." (This wasn't part of a story; this was the story.) It followed Politico's profile last month of U.S. Rep. Vance McAllister and his bid for reelection, which included the sentence, "As he gobbles banana cream pudding, McAllister admits he's gained about 40 pounds."
The story also included House Speaker John Boehner jibing at the candidate about his midsection — and news that a porch swing collapsed under McAllister.
