Parkway Partners and the Fruit Tree Planting Foundation (FTPF) kicked off a series of five community fruit orchard plantings earlier this month throughout the New Orleans area. Sites include the Life is Art Foundation (2451 N. Villere St.), Our School at Blair Grocery (1714 Benton St.), the Guerrilla Garden (Forstall and Douglass streets), Oak Park Civic Association Garden (1488 Burbank St.) and the Chartres Community Garden (5723 Chartres St.). FTPF, a San Diego, Calif.-based urban gardening initiative, provided fruit tree planning workshops at each site for volunteers who will help plant and maintain the orchards.
The foundation aims to provide areas devastated by the flood following Hurricane Katrina with improvements in air, soil and water quality, as well as access to healthy, local food. Other FTPF efforts are underway in cities such as Chicago, Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., San Francisco and others. Visit www.ftpf.org for more information. — Alex Woodward
