Kay Danné believes that dressing well makes people feel better and that finding great clothes at prices they can afford not only makes shopping fun but can also be a healing experience.
At her On The Other Hand Exclusive Resale Boutique (8204 Oak St., 861-0159; www.ontheotherhandconsignment.com), Dann finds "gently worn" designer clothing for men and women and offers them for well below what they would cost in other stores. Since the storm, she's discounted her prices even more.
"We're doing a big sale to help people who lost everything, their whole wardrobe, in the storm," says Dann. Many items are 90 percent off and most others are 50 to 75 percent off.
"God blessed me by not having my store destroyed in the storm," she says. "This sale is my way of saying thanks, my gift to my customers."
The store has fashions from evening gowns to business attire to casual clothes for men and women, plus handbags, jewelry and accessories.
"When you shop here, you can buy designer labels for a fraction of the cost," she says. "Hopefully, the shop helps people to forget their worries. I like to create an atmosphere ... of shopping therapy. Hopefully, it's also a bit of healing from the hurts to the city."
Bamboo Apothecary (4112 Magazine St., 895-1664) owner Jill Painter says her new salon of skin and body products and treatments originally was scheduled to open in September 2005, but Hurricanes Katrina and Rita pushed her opening date back to mid-March.
The new store, modeled after a successful venture of Painter's in Charlotte, N.C., opened recently to offer high-end products for the skin, hair and body as well as spa treatments. Some of the product lines are exclusive to Bamboo Apothecary, such as Laura Mercier products, which are only available in Louisiana at the new store.
The spa offers body treatments, manicures, pedicures, facials, waxing and massage. "The products that we sell are the products that we use in the spa," Painter says. "We're focusing on customer service and giving people what they want."
