Grocery chain Trader Joe's (www.traderjoes.com) will open its first New Orleans-area location next year. A press release announced a 10,200-square-foot store will open on Veterans Memorial Boulevard at North Labarre Road in Metairie in late 2016. At press time, the news wasn't on the company's web page listing new openings.
Trader Joe's opened its first Louisiana location in Baton Rouge. Weekend trips there have shown a few New Orleanians are willing to drive an hour to stock up on inexpensive wines and Trader Joe's own branded foodstuffs like cookie butter, frozen pizzas and quiches, cheap cereal, cookies and coffee — all for sale in a casual atmosphere with Hawaiian-shirted clerks who ring ship's bells when they need help at the registers. The chain is in 39 states. —
