Search online for New Orleans' best hair salon and you'll be pointed in the direction of Salon du Beau Monde (612 Julia St., 568-0050; www.salonbeaumonde.com). The Julia Street salon has beaten its competition the last two years to win Citysearch.com's distinction as the city's best place to get a haircut and a highlight job.
Owner Dallas Alleman attributes his salon's popularity to his years of professional hair-care experience. Alleman, who is originally from Louisiana, was trained in England, taught haircutting techniques in New York to aspiring stylists and owned a salon in New Mexico before returning to New Orleans to set up shop in 2000.
'I was trained in England in the '70s," Alleman says. 'The first 15 years of my career were spent traveling around the world doing hair shows."
Alleman's career as a master haircutter means his customers receive first-class treatment and his staff benefits from his years in the beauty world.
'Because I taught hairdressers for so many years, I have a wealth of experience," he says. 'My staff is therefore fully trained as well."
Although Alleman is undoubtedly accomplished in the craft of hair care, he doesn't take sole credit for the salon's success. He praises his staff and says teamwork is what sets the salon apart from others in the city.
Salon du Beau Monde is an Aveda Concept Salon and uses only Aveda products. Currently, Alleman and his team offer hair services such as cuts, color treatments and styling.
'Before the storm, we offered spa services, but I lost all my staff after Katrina," Alleman says. 'We plan on reopening the spa, but I don't know [how] soon."
Alleman recently expanded his staff, a move which he says will make the goal of reopening the spa more attainable. But even without spa services, the salon is a multipurpose space. Alleman takes advantage of his arts district location and displays artwork on the salon's walls.
'The way our salon is set up, it's a gallery," he says. 'We show a new artist every month. We also open up for Art for Art's sake in October and White Linen Night in August."
