The Good German

Oscar-winning director and longtime Baton Rouge resident Steven Soderberg has covered a lot of territory since his break-through Sex, Lies and Videotape (1989). His credits include Erin Brockovich, the highly stylized Traffic, The Limey and the Ocean's Eleven, Twelve and Thirteen franchise. Now he's back with George Clooney (pictured), Cate Blanchett and Tobey Maguire in a noirish story set in Berlin after the fall of the Third Reich. In The Good German, Jake Geismer (Clooney) returns to the city as an Army reporter and rekindles a past relationship with Lena Brandt (Blanchett), who is trying to help her husband, a German the Allies are pursing, escape from the city. The intrigue is personal and political as the war-ravaged city tries to forget the horrors of Hitler's regime and cope with the impending occupation and pre-Cold War posturing. This will be the film's only screening in New Orleans. Tickets $8 general admission, $6 New Orleans Film Society members. -- Will Coviello
