The Count: international travel buyers in New Orleans this month

Competition among cities for tourist dollars grows more intense every year. That's why local hospitality industry leaders are pumped that New Orleans is hosting the U.S. Travel Association's IPW 2016 trade show. IPW is the largest generator of U.S. travel. More than 6,400 delegates from 73 countries will convene at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center for the event, which also was held in New Orleans in 2002, 1993 and 1979.

It's not your typical trade show. It's like a five-day multibillion-dollar marketplace where 1,300 international travel buyers participate in more than 100,000 pre-scheduled meetings with U.S. travel organizations. Another 500 reporters will cover the event and spotlight New Orleans.   "While the immediate projected economic impact to the state will be in the millions," said CVB President and CEO Stephen Perry, "the ultimate payoff of IPW will ripple through the local economy for an estimated three years after, generating approximately $1.7 billion in direct economic impact."
