BOUQUET The GM Foundation has donated a 2006 Hummer H3 to the Southeast Louisiana Chapter of the American Red Cross through local dealer Hummer of Metairie. The vehicle will be converted into a four-wheel-drive emergency communications unit that will give Red Cross volunteers and staff access to communications tools even when normal systems have been disrupted. The Hummer comes with complementary OnStar service and a GM vehicle service plan to ensure that it remains reliable.

BOUQUET Natalie Batey, Caitlin Clarke, Christian Clarke and Isabel Gibson, all second-graders at St. AndrewÕs Episcopal School in New Orleans, are among 24 regional winners in the Toshiba/National Science Teachers Association ExploraVision Awards, one of worldÕs largest science and technology competitions. Their entry, ÒCotton Cane: The Enemy of Hurricanes,Ó proposes dropping processed sugar cane stalks into hurricane clouds to absorb water, break the stormÕs water cycle, and prevent hurricane maturation.

BOUQUET Jefferson Parish Library, working with, is expanding a free program, ÒLive Homework Help,Ó that gives local children and young adults on-line tutorial assistance. The program had been available only through the libraryÕs computers, but now can be accessed via any computer with Internet access by visiting The libraryÕs Web site give students from grades 4 through college introductory levels live access to qualified tutors at through the end of this school year.

BRICKBAT BRICKBAT BRICKBAT BRICKBAT! FEMA has not had much good news for Louisiana in the wake of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Hundreds if not thousands of property owners and institutions still await word that promised relief is finally on the way Ñ mostly because of endless bureaucratic delays, snafus and red tape. Last week, FEMA missed the initial deadline for its all-important revisions to local flood maps, causing additional frustration and anxiety among local property owners and businesses waiting to rebuild.
