Gov. Mike Foster
has scheduled a state Coastal Summit for Aug. 15 in Baton Rouge. The one-day event will educate business, community and political leaders on the current condition of Louisiana's coast. It also will showcase restoration strategies and other efforts to protect the state coastline. The Coalition to Restore Coastal Louisiana encouraged Foster to call the summit. It wants a large-scale plan to address Louisiana's coastal deterioration.
Dr. Gwendolyn Midlo Hall and David Kunian
both have won honors from the American Association for State and Local History (AASLH). Hall, a part-time Louisiana resident and professor emerita of history at Rutgers University, has received the AASLH Award of Merit for "Databases for the Study of Afro-Louisiana History and Genealogy, 1699-1860." Kunian, a WWOZ DJ and music historian, received the organization's Certificate of Commendation for radio documentaries.
an arts consultant, has moved her National Performance Network to her hometown of New Orleans, partnering with Dog & Pony Theatre and Junebug Productions to help gain more visibility for local performing artists. Local artists anticipate the move to be a boon to the scene.
Ernst and Young
a national accounting firm with a downtown New Orleans branch, had to scramble to retrieve clients' personal tax returns that had been dumped in a pizza parlor trash bin in Mandeville. The restaurant owner found the tax statements, printed on the firm's letterhead, last week. The accounting firm is blaming a vendor for the apparent breach of client confidentiality.
