The annual James Beard Foundation (www.jamesbeard.org) awards, announced May 5 in New York, were kind to New Orleans. The city is home to four of the five chefs nominated for Best Chef: South, and the top honor was shared by Sue Zemanick of Gautreau's (1728 Soniat St., 504-899-7397; www.gautreausrestaurant.com) and Ivy (5015 Magazine St., 504-899-1330) and Ryan Prewitt of Peche Seafood Grill (800 Magazine St., 504-522-1744; www.pecherestaurant.com). Peche also won Best New Restaurant in America.
Ryan Prewitt won Best Chef: South (along with Sue Zemanick of Gautreau's) and his restaurant Peche was named Best New Restaurant in America by the James Beard Foundation.
Also nominated for Best Chef: South were Justin Devillier of La Petite Grocery (4238 Magazine St., 504-891-3377; www.lapetitegrocery.com) and Alon Shaya of Domenica (123 Baronne St., 504-648-6020; www.domenica- restaurant.com).
Ashley Hansen accepted an America's Classic award for Hansen's Sno Bliz (4801 Tchoupitoulas St., 504-891-9788; www.snobliz.com), the snowball shop opened by her grandparents.
The foundation also maintains a hall-of-fame Who's Who of Food and Beverage in America. Chef/restaurateur John Besh (www.chefjohnbesh.com), who won Best Chef: Southeast in 2006, was one of six new inductees. — WILL COVIELLO
