Spicy Rock Fest IV

For those who like it hot, the fourth annual Spicy Rock Music Festival promises to stimulate the palette. Bands from around the state, including Meriwether from Baton Rouge and Point of Reason from Mandeville, will rock back to back in this two-night extravaganza. New Orleans bands include Slang Angus, The City Life and Ellipsis (pictured). The night will be a reminder that rock 'n' roll will never die -- and it can't stop moving. Ellipsis' sound has been alternately described as psychedelic, reggae and classic rock. The group attributes the diverse sound to its hometown, noting that in New Orleans, brass bands outnumber rock groups three to one. Shreveport's Dirtfoot features a banjo and washboard in its repertoire of instruments, creating a sound that is both "Southern" and "rock" without falling into the dubious "Southern rock" category. For those interested in going "unplugged," a second stage at the festival will feature acoustic artists including 16-year-old sensation Julie O'Dell. Tickets $10 advance, $12 at the door. -- Vi Landry
