Attorney Catherine Smith of Algiers will run for Troy Carter's District C seat on the New Orleans council next February. Carter cannot seek another term from that district and plans to run for mayor.
Smith, a former assistant attorney general, also served on the Board of Trustees for State Colleges and Universities and has sat as an ad hoc judge in Municipal and Traffic Courts. Her campaign literature names education, economic development, crime and the Saints as major issues. She notes that she is the only female certified NFL agent in Louisiana, which gives her extra insight into the importance of the Saints franchise. She also opposes the privatization of the Sewerage and Water Board.
Others said to be eyeing the race are Michie M. Bissell, a former RTA administrator, and mayoral aide Jeffrey J. Arnold, son of Algiers Assessor Tom Arnold.
