At Shop of the Two Sisters (1800 Magazine St., 525-2747; www.shopofthetwosisters.com), good things come in twos. Sister pair Lee and Rose Ali run the business, and the store once had two locations. Recently the shop introduced a sleep system that pulls double duty " what co-owner Rose Ali calls fabulous bedding and an environmentally friendly home addition. The Somina line of mattresses and bed coverings, the store's first 'green" offering, is made from environmentally sound latex and all-natural oils, including renewable soja-bean oil.
'I want to promote (environmental) consciousness in New Orleans," Rose says. 'It's a new energy that needs to be pursued and encouraged. (The purchase is) a decision to start going in that direction " and it's fabulous. It's a win-win situation."
Rose says her green inclinations stem from being a dedicated recycler and an artist who is a self-proclaimed pack rat.
'I like taking what's trash and making it fabulous," she explains, adding that someday she'd like to incorporate her recreated lamps, chandeliers and furniture into the store's inventory.
Years ago, after the sisters stopped in New Orleans on a road trip, interior designer Lee Ali fell in love with the city and decided to launch the business. Rose followed suit 15 years later, moving to New Orleans to give her sister a hand. The store opened in a small French Quarter space and later expanded to include its current Garden District location. After Hurricane Katrina, the sisters decided to downscale Shop of the Two Sisters to one location.
Working solely out of the Magazine Street store, Rose says she and Lee are a functional sister act and bring their different creative visions into their collaborations.
'We get along tremendously well," Rose says. 'We do have different tastes, but we can usually come together on things. We feed off each other. We really do have a lot of fun."
The store carries furniture and accessories " both antique and new " and provides interior design services. Rose says the requirement for what the Shop of the Two Sisters carries is simple: 'We have to love it. We carry it because we like it, not just because it'll be a good seller."
- Lee and Rose Ali recently reopened Shop of the Two Sisters on Magazine Street. Plans for a grand opening event are in the works.
