There's a new dance studio in town, and it's not for little girls in pink tutus. Opening Jan. 13, Shannon Wolfe's Saffron Studios (3121 Metairie Road, Metairie, 338-2962; www.saffronstudio.org) will provide a variety of energizing dance classes with convenient after-work hours for adult women.
'We will have some events every now and then that men can come to," Wolfe says, 'but it's mostly for women."
With 10 instructors, Saffron will offer all sorts of movement classes, including ballet, jazz, hip-hop, belly dance, swing, yoga, Pilates, Charleston, Lindy hop and Bhangra dance (a hip-hop-infused update to traditional Indian folk dance). The classes are designed to allow students to keep up even if they don't attend continuously. 'I want people to be able to drop in whenever," Wolfe says.
A membership to Saffron Studios allows students to take any class at any time. When the studio first opens, classes will be offered after 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday and on Saturday mornings. Wolfe says daytime classes and more weekend classes may be added in the future.
The studio will regularly host alternative health workshops, and massages will be available by appointment.
Wolfe has taken dance classes consistently since she was in junior high school and began teaching after graduating from college. Before opening her own business, she taught at a local yoga studio. Wolfe has experience with many styles of movement but now is focused on one particular form: belly dance.
'In 1999, I accidentally discovered belly dancing at a women's center," she says. 'I fell in love with it and since then, that's what I've been doing."
Saffron Studios will offer two styles of belly dance " the modern, earthy tribal-fusion type and the cabaret style often performed in clubs and restaurants. As with all classes at Saffron, these are designed to allow women to connect in a fun environment.
'We want to teach you something, but we want you to have fun, too," Wolfe says.
Prospective students can get a taste of what Saffron offers during a special event from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 13. The event will feature dance performances and an opportunity to discuss classes with instructors. There also will be prizes and refreshments.
