Brisket, the mechanical bull, is a big draw at Deep South Lounge. You don't have to be an urban cowboy (or girl) to find entertainment at the Deep South Lounge (329 Decatur St., 529-3331; www.deepsouthlounge.com), which plays host to group parties, tourists and a loyal cadre of locals.
The French Quarter bar has the only mechanical bull in the city, and groups find the novelty a perfect diversion for parties. "We get a lot of bachelor parties, fraternity parties, bachelorette parties, [business] organizations," says manager Louis Williams. "The bull is just something fun for big groups to do, and if you're with a small group, it's just fun to be in the bar and watch."
Besides the bull, called Brisket, the lounge offers a full bar with cocktails, domestic and imported beers and what Williams claims are probably the biggest TV screens in the city -- a 15-by-15 foot screen inside the bar and a 35-by-35 foot screen in the back courtyard where Williams shows westerns and movies such as Urban Cowboy.
Williams says Deep South Lounge's kitchen is currently undergoing renovations and should be serving standard bar fare by Mardi Gras. Customers also can expect to hear live music soon.
"We hope to get music in there by Mardi Gras," he says. "Even if we don't make that goal, we should have music soon. It's going to be a whole range, from rock, country, blue grass, we may even occasionally have DJs come in. We like to mix it up with a good cross-section of music for New Orleans."
Dress the Part
All you need for a great, personalized Mardi Gras costume is an idea and a trip to Miss Claudia's Vintage Clothing and Costume Shop (4204 Magazine St., 897-6310). Miss Claudia's doesn't stock many packaged costumes -- and none for children -- but the staff loves to help customers pick out everything they need to get into character.
"It's about creative costuming," says Miss Claudia. "Come with an idea and we'll help you create a costume." The store carries apparel and accessories from the 1920s to the '80s, including berets, tuxedoes, go-go boots, gloves, wigs, pirate accoutrements, sequined velvet capes and dresses that Carnival krewe members originally wore as costumes on floats, and more.
