Shannon Powell Group

comment

Stellar drummer Shannon Powell is known, with justified immodesty, as the 'King of Tremé." Giving him sovereignty over a neighborhood with no shortage of musical skill in residence is the versatility of his talent. The former altar boy and gospel singer plays like a musical polyglot and has been equally at ease pounding skins for the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, the late Danny Barker, Harry Connick Jr.'s big band and Ellis Marsalis back in the day. Most recently, Powell laid down beats for the legendary octogenarian gospel ensemble the Blind Boys of Alabama, on a New Orleans-themed record due out at the end of this month.
