Return to the Forbidden Planet

When The Surfaris wrote the hit single 'Wipe Out," it's unlikely the band had the Shakespearean shipwreck of The Tempest in mind. But these two disparate works of genius come together in the Jefferson Performing Arts Center's production of the Olivier Award-winning musical Return to the Forbidden Planet. The plot, fusing The Tempest and the 1956 sci-fi campfest Forbidden Planet, involves mad scientists, chisel-jawed captains and spaceship-wrecked castaways all breaking into the sunny, pop hits of the '50s and '60s. Audience members board as passengers for this intergalactic space flight. Costumes are encouraged for opening night on Halloween, and there is an after party with the cast. Claire Van Cott directs Justin Wilcox, Tommy Venuti, Abby Peterson, Meredith Long, Joe Van Zandt, Allison Rich, Richard Hutton, Jeff Springmann and Katie Nigsch. Tickets $26 general admission, $22 seniors/military, $19 students, $12 children. — Anna Marschalk-Burns
