Quotes of the week

Louisiana on the shutdown

"The theater that went on with [former Alaska Gov.] Sarah Palin and [Texas Sen.] Ted Cruz — it's like there's a group of us desperately trying to put out a fire and they're throwing gasoline on it. That's not good. I believe that a principled compromise can be found in the Senate, and I believe a principled compromise can be found in the White House. Whether it can be sustained by a House so divided, and a Republican Party so turned on itself, I don't know." — Sen. Mary Landrieu, on the budget impasse that shut down the federal government and threatened the extension of the debt ceiling.

"There are members with a different agenda. And I'm not sure they're Republicans and I'm not sure they're conservative." — Rep. Charles Boustany, R-Lafayette, to National Journal, taking a swipe at some of the tea party-identified Republicans in the House of Representatives. Boustany was the only member of the Louisiana GOP to vote yes on ending last week's government shutdown.

"I'll vote against it. But that will get us into Round 2. See, we're going to start this all over again." — Rep. John Fleming, R-Minden, in The New York Times, indicating the tea party wing of the GOP will take up cudgels again when the debt ceiling extension expires once again on Feb. 7, 2014.
