Bella Blue, Headmistress of The New Orleans School of Burlesque, is doing something different to help her students break into New Orleans' booming burlesque scene. Each month, she produces a show called The Graduates, featuring students who have gone through her workshops. Bella laments that newly trained burlesque performers "fall into this limbo place where it's hard to get booked because you're new, but can't improve without experience and stage time." Her monthly series promises sultry performances from fresh talent and offers dancers the stage time they need and fair pay, helping them to grow as performers and get booked at other shows around town. The next show is November 18 in the Back Theater at the AllWays Lounge.
About the New Orleans School of Burlesque
What began in 2008 as a one-time workshop on the Westbank, originally advertised through Myspace bulletins (#TBT) has grown into New Orleans' only studio offering instruction on all the aspects of burlesque from character development, costuming, history, and more. The New Orleans School of Burlesque offers weekly classes, master classes from visiting instructors, and a 7-week workshop providing education on the various facets of burlesque. At her school, Bella Blue teaches fan dancing, chair dancing, beginner act development, intermediate/advanced act development, private sessions, and private group classes for bachelorette and birthday parties.
