Papa Mali's First Annual Supernatural Ball

Paranormal occurrences aren't on the official bill for cosmic bluesman Papa Mali's first Supernatural Ball, but the outlook is good for at least an otherworldly vibe. The sometime-New Orleanian, sometime-Austinite's last release, Do Your Thing, was a bubbling potion of swamp-damaged blues, greasy funk and chattering psychedelia conjured up from the essence of Dr. John, the Meters, Tony Joe White, and black cat bone. The ball invites several of the New Orleans artists who appeared on Do Your Thing to join Papa Mali's rock 'n' roll coven, including Big Chief Monk Boudreaux of the Golden Eagles Mardi Gras Indians. Also on the bill are musical mojo makers Stanton Moore, Anders Osborne, Big Sam Williams, Jon Cleary and others. The socially conscious, island-infused funk act E.O.E. opens. Tickets $12 in advance, $15 at the door. — Alison Fensterstock
