Oktoberfest

comment

The beer garden at Deutsches Haus will be in full bloom as Oktoberfest continues this weekend and through the end of the month. The local version of the celebration of Bavarian culture is hosted by volunteer members of Deutsches Haus, a nonprofit social club that formed in New Orleans 10 years after World War I as an expression of ethnic pride. Today, that translates to long steam tables of bratwurst and other sausages, meaty sauerkraut, German potato salad, cabbage rolls stuffed with ground beef, buttered pretzels, iced cakes and more than 40 taps dispensing draft beer from Germany, plus wine and schnapps. The family-oriented event features traditional German music onstage, revelers dressed in folk attire like lederhosen and dirndl and as many renditions of the 'chicken dance" as the crowd can handle. Tickets $5 general admission, free for children 12 and younger. — Ian McNulty
