Love 'Shack
Who says the hippest hangouts have to be in the French Quarter, the Marigny or Uptown? Hop on River Road (hint: go all the way up Magazine Street past the zoo, and hang a right at the end) and cross the city line into Jefferson. There, you can't miss the Rivershack Tavern (3449 River Road, Jefferson, 834-4938) on your right. It's a garish, colorful, fun building whose eye-popping exterior is no match for the place's outrageous interior: barstools with mannequin character legs, Elvis memorabilia, celebrity kitsch and the world's largest collection of tacky ashtrays. Pull up a cowboy-legs barstool and order a cold beer on tap or a margarita (some would argue they're among the city's best). An order of fried pickles or a "Shank-You" burger might keep you going for yet another round of pool. (E-5) -- Eileen Loh Harrist
