Nutcracker Swing

comment

There's no shortage of holiday-time renditions of the Nutcracker, but here's a spirited reinterpretation of Tchaikovsky's classic. Duke Ellington created a version, and New Orleans native Lula Elzy present's Nutcracker Swing, pairing his arrangements with contemporary dance. The show marks the 15th anniversary of Lula Elzy Dance Theater. Bandleader John Mahoney leads a 15-piece orchestra through numbers like "Sugar Run Cherry" instead of "Sugar Plum Fairy" and "Arabesque Cookie" instead of the "Arabian Dance." Musical guests include Leah Chase, Davell Crawford, Clyde Kerr Jr., Irvin Mayfield and Michael White. The performance also includes a theatrical staging of Wynton Marsalis' "T'was the Night Before Christmas." Tickets $25 general admission, $20 students/seniors. -- Will Coviello
