The New Orleans Redevelopment Authority (NORA) hopes to get residents to plant at least 100 acres of garden space throughout the city. By purchasing a lot through NORA's Lot Next Door program, residents can sign up for Growing Home, which awards up to $10,000 at the end of the property sale for gardening improvements to blighted properties.
Purchasers choose the landscape improvements they want to make, and with the help of Growing Home's landscape architects, they have nine months from the end of sale to get the garden up and running. Growing Home facilitators check every three months to ensure the project is on track.
The program opened in February, and its projects include the Old Aurora Community Garden in Algiers and Jeanell Holmes' backyard garden project behind a salvaged shotgun house in Holy Cross, among several others. — Alex Woodward
