You're still having fun when — what's this? The sun's coming up? Oh, my God. When you stumble into the street, contemplating the monumental hangover you're about to have, you might be coming out of one of these temples to fun ... and bad decisions.

Buffa's Lounge
You hit every bar in the Lower Quarter and ended up at this 24/7 spot. There's smoking in the front, non-smoking in the rear, friendly and strange neighborhood regulars everywhere and cheap booze to complement bar snacks like gator balls, chili-cheese fries and the Dark Side Burger. If you think you can handle spicy food, order the ridiculously hot Atomic Chuck Wings and discover a new level of bad decision-making. 1001 Esplanade Ave., (504) 949-0038;, @buffasbar

Chuck's Sports Bar
"Damn Near 24 Hours," says the awning outside one of the last un-yuppiefied spots in the CBD, where the pours are both cheap and ridiculously strong. This isn't your typical sports bar with a million TVs, but a dark sanctuary for a strong crowd of regulars and locals and the occasional visitor from the nearby hotels. Smoking not only allowed, but practically mandatory. 510 Gravier St., (504) 524-9485

F&M Patio Bar
If you're not in college, you probably shouldn't be here. If you are, don't tell Mom and Dad about your excursions at this raucous spot famous for 3 a.m. dancing on the pool table (it's a tradition) and drunken pickups (attempted and otherwise). The grill stays open until nearly sunrise so F&M's gooey cheese fries can take the edge off your buzz. 4841 Tchoupitoulas St., (504) 895-6784;

Kajun's Pub
This is the round-the-clock bar St. Claude Avenue has come to depend on. During the day, it's a neighborhood crowd; at night, the bar hosts locals of all kinds; and in the wee hours, it's anything goes. Karaoke most nights (you decide whether that's a plus), but after a few shots, it might be you up there having a drunken "Total Eclipse of the Heart." 2256 St. Claude Ave., (504) 947-3735;, @KajunPub

Le Roundup
Half a block off Bourbon Street but on another planet, you'll find barflies, transsexuals, drag queens, off-duty service industry personnel and the occasional tourist all piled in to this battered 24-hour Western-themed bar. If you're bemoaning the homogenization of New Orleans, visit this throwback to a wilder, woolier French Quarter where the bathrooms are labeled "men" and "others." Gentrification? What's that? 819 St. Louis St., (504) 561-8340

Ms. Mae's
This walk-of-shame late-night hole even has an online Wall of Shame (, with photos of people who have been tragically overserved at this infamous Magazine Street dive. Ms. Mae's got a big boost when New Orleans Saints defensive coordinator Rob Ryan stopped in a few times after home games last season. 4336 Magazine St., (504) 895-9401; @MsMaes

The Saint
This sorta-hidden Lower Garden District hole-in-the-wall doesn't even open until 7 p.m. (happy hour!) and really gets going well past midnight. A variety of DJs, rock 'n' roll vinyl nights and the famous tiki-and-karaoke "Tikioke Tuesdays" keep things mixed up all week. Walking around the neighborhood in the wee hours: inadvisable. 961 St. Mary St., (504) 523-0050;, @SaintBar

Snake & Jake's Christmas Club
You drank way too many Schlitzes, you sat on a couch with strangers, you used a bathroom that would have sent your mother screaming in horror and you threw a ball about 40 times for one of the dogs roaming the bar. Now it's 8 a.m. and you're stumbling outside into a lovely Uptown residential neighborhood, deservedly getting the stinkeye from joggers and dog-walkers. That's Snake & Jake's. 7612 Oak St., (504) 861-2802;, @snakeandjakes
