Magnetic Ear CD-Release Party

For two memorable months this summer, saxophonist Martin Krusche spiced up the Saturn Bar with his 'curry residency" " Thursday evening gigs for which the opening act was a big pot of vegetarian curry, chutneys and pappadams that Krusche whipped up from scratch. His new album, Magnetic Ear Live at the Saturn Bar, is a collection of live recordings from those homey, informal gigs with his five-piece experimental jazz combo, which at alternate times included multiple members of the exploratory, avant-garde jazz/rock group the Other Planets and sousaphonist-about-town Matt Perrine. The album features the minimalist, relaxed best of those eight gigs, from Krusche's own whimsical compositions like 'Tastee Donut Disaster Zone Dance" to an incantatory take on Billy Strayhorn's café society weeper 'Lush Life," which showcases Dan Oestreicher's baritone sax in all the instrument's meditative, melancholy beauty. Free admission. " Alison Fensterstock
