The premiere of award-winning radio historian David Kunian's newest documentary was pre-empted in September by Hurricane Gustav, but airings and listening parties have been rescheduled for this week. A longtime WWOZ show host, Kunian has earned critical accolades for audio explorations of New Orleans mainstays like piano wizard James Booker and the legendary Dew Drop Inn. With this piece, he turns his focus to a contemporary subject. The barely middle-aged bandleader and guitarist Jonathan Freilich has graced New Orleans listeners with a hefty resumé of musical innovation, including the New Orleans Klezmer All-Stars, the avant-garde jazz group the Naked Orchestra, the rock-steady band OO7 and the R&B group Poor Man's Speedball. Kunian's feature-length documentary on Freilich's musical personae brings the incisive critic's eye that has served him well in his historical undertakings while looking at a subject in the prime of his career. The show airs on WWOZ 90.7 FM and streams at www.wwoz.org at noon Wed., Nov. 19; 10:30 p.m. Wed., Nov. 19; 10:30 p.m. Thu., Nov. 20; and at noon Fri., Nov 21. Free admission. — Fensterstock
