James Singleton String Quartet

Prolific and talented experimental bassist James Singleton (pictured) always has a trick or three up his sleeve, with an ever-fluctuating roster of live projects that showcase the talents of his many creative friends from all corners of the music scene. His latest obsession is a string supergroup composed of jazz and classical all-stars who share his funky, improvisational approach. The quartet is composed of well-known players-about-town, including two former Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra members: New Orleans Klezmer All-Star Dave Rebeck on violin and hot swing violinist Matt Rhody. Rounding out the bill is the unpredictable cellist Helen Gillet, who has played with downtown rockers like the Happy Talk Band and Clint Maedgen as well as her own French chanson/musette project Wazozo. A CD of the group playing Singleton's compositions is in the works and should be released by Jazz Fest. Tickets $10. — Alison Fensterstock
