State Sen. Paulette Irons is moving closer to announcing her candidacy to become the first woman mayor of New Orleans. "It will be a September to remember," says press secretary Cheron Brylski. "We are moving at a pace we are happy with in terms of fundraising. I don't know if we will catch up to the big boys, because we started so late, but we are doing well."
The state senator has already met her Labor Day goal of $200,000, Brylski adds. Irons on Aug. 10 raised $20,000 at a $500 per couple fundraiser at the French Quarter home of plaintiff attorney Stuart Smith. She raised $78,000 at a June 28 fundraiser to celebrate her 49th birthday. Irons has said she will need at least a $750,000 campaign war chest to win. Irons' campaign team includes campaign finance co-chairs Leslie Jacobs, the governor's appointee to a state education policy board; businessman Jim Garvey; political operative Ike Spears; and lawyer Ron Austin.
