Home Brewing Law

Home brewers have always been regulated by federal law, but House Bill 1484 would put new protections into state law. Rep. Michael Danahay, D-Sulphur, admits he had a pretty good time researching the legislation. "The advantage of working on this bill is we got to taste a lot of home brew," he says, laughing. Kirk Coco, president of NOLA Brewing, says home brewers are in danger of running afoul of the law without the bill. "What we're stating is that home brewers have the right to home brew, they have the right to meet, share their home brews together and basically perform as home brewers have been doing for the past 30 years," he says. As for free samples, Coco says the allure of beer alone has been enough to keep lawmakers interested. The bill was pending action on the House floor last week. — Jeremy Alford
