Only in the world of barbecuing could this list of teams mean serious business: Aporkalypse Now, Captain Porkenheimer, Piggy Stardust, Saturday Night Cleaver, Mr. Pig Stuff and Swineaux. Those groups are among the more than 90 teams that will slow-cook whole hogs, ribs, pork belly, shoulder, butt and more at Hogs For the Cause on the grounds of UNO Lakefront Arena Friday and Saturday.
The annual event features plenty of barbecue and prizes for best whole hog, ribs and other categories, including Porkpourri, for creative items using pork.
The music lineup includes Shovels & Rope, Railroad Earth, George Porter Jr., New Breed Brass Band and others on Saturday. Futurebirds, London Souls, Chris Robinson Brotherhood, Seratones, Motel Radio and others perform Friday.
There's also a luau-themed "Hogwaii" dinner Thursday night. It features food by the Link Restaurant Group and cocktails from Cure, Cane & Table and Cafe Henri.
Hogs for the Cause raises funds to assist families with children battling pediatric brain cancer, and in nine years it has donated more than $1 million to 400 families and hospitals.
Admission is $25 in advance, $35 at the gate. VIP packages are available.
