Volunteers are needed to help clean up the north end of City Park from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, June 3, during "Mowin' Down the Mess." Volunteers are asked to bring lawnmowers, weed-eaters, plastic bags and gloves to help refurbish the area bounded by Marconi Drive, Robert E. Lee Boulevard, the City Park Driving Range and the Agriculture Center.
Though volunteer groups have cleaned up various parts of the park, which suffered $43 million in damages from Hurricane Katrina, this is one area that has not yet been touched, and all of the equipment the park used to maintain the area was destroyed in the storm.
"The cleanup of this area will open up a part of the park that is most used by joggers and walkers and will give families a whole new setting for picnics and activities," says Leslie Kramer, owner of Equest Farms at City Park, a 20-acre site that has been refurbished already. "With enough volunteers and equipment, we can clean up the area in a day and give the community a much-needed venue for family fun."
Volunteers should meet at the corner of Robert E. Lee Boulevard and Marconi Drive early Saturday. For more information, call Kramer at 982-0888.
