Local author Helen Scully will soon go on tour in support of the newly released paperback edition of her debut historical novel, In the Hope of Rising Again, a Southern tale spanning the Civil War to the Great Depression and loosely based on the life of her great-grandmother, Regina Rapier Marston. But first she will take a break from writing her second novel and sign some books right here. In an attempt to recreate the era and town of Mobile, Ala., Scully studied historical documents such as the Civil War letters written by her great-great grandfather and the Mobile Register newspaper. The story grounds itself in the fictional Regina Riant Morrow, whose life is laden with tragedy, loss and financial ruin, offset only by her friendship to her black maid and her Catholic faith. Critics have labeled the novel as Southern gothic and honed in on Scully's great and welcomed proclivity for languorous musing on all the big questions in life. The author will read from and discuss her book.
