Gambit Wins Press Club Awards


Gambit Weekly won the Ashton Phelps Sr. Memorial Award for excellence in editorial writing at the Press Club of New Orleans' 50th annual awards competition July 19 for work published in 2007.

The Ashton Phelps award was given to Gambit for "Keep the Crook in Jail — It's Important" (Commentary, Aug. 14, 2007), which won first place in the Editorial category.

Gambit writer David Winkler-Schmit received first place in the General News category for "Jeremy Davis' Gift" (News & Views, Aug. 28, 2007), Alison Fensterstock was the first-place winner in the Column category for her weekly "Sounds" column, and production director Dora Sison brought home a first-place win for her headline "House Swarming" (Cover, Oct. 23, 2007).

Editor Clancy DuBos earned second-place in the Columns category for his weekly "Politics" column, Winkler-Schmit won second-place honors in Science/Health/Technology for "Cajunetics" (Cover, Jan. 30, 2007), and third place in the same category for "From Mice to Man" (Health & Wellness, Jan. 2, 2007).

Gambit freelance contributor Adam Norris won second place in the Sports Feature category for "Dream Team — The Sequel" (Cover, July 24, 2007), and Winkler-Schmit got third place in the Feature category for "Psyched Out" (Cover, March 6, 2007).

Honorable mentions went to David Kunian for "More Thrills from Blueberry Hill" (Feature, Dec. 4, 2007), Sison in Editorial Illustration for "Food for Thought" (Cover, Jan. 23, 2007), and D. Eric Bookhardt in Critical Review for "Cuba Libra" (Inside Art, Dec. 11, 2007).

Former Gambit intern and current contributor Lauren LaBorde, a student at Loyola University, received a journalism scholarship at the ceremony.
