Galactic with the Preservation Hall Jazz Band

10 p.m. Wed., Dec. 31

Tipitinas, 501 Napoleon Ave., 895-TIPS;

Uptown's perennial masters of next-generation jazz and hip-hop-infused funk continue their tradition of welcoming the New Year with a no-holds-barred, costumed extravaganza at the venerable Tipitina's. If this year's show is anything like previous ones, Galactic — clad in elaborate and truly bizarre outfits — will blow your mind well into the earliest hours of 2009 with fat rhythms, go-go girls and surprise guests — after a balloon drop and Champagne toast at midnight. The Preservation Hall Jazz Band, which often has its own tricks up the band members' deceptively impeccable suit-sleeves (New Orleans Bingo! Show clowns, I'm looking at you) also performs. The VIP ticket gets you access to an open bar and snacks in a reserved area, plus a Galactic New Year's Eve concert poster and a meet-and-greet with the band. Proceeds benefit the Tipitina's Foundation and the Staletta Fund, a scholarship program set up by Galactic drummer Stanton Moore and his wife Aletta, which benefits young New Orleans musicians. Tickets $55 general admission, $125 VIP. — Fensterstock
