Steak Knife Broiling Again

The Steak Knife (8550 Pontchartrain Blvd., 488-8981) is serving its menu of steaks and seafood again, relocated now from the restaurant's flood-wracked Harrison Avenue home to the former West End location of VooDoo BBQ. Owner Bobby Roth set up shop in the new space in December, but only opened the bar at first. The steakhouse had been a fixture on Harrison Avenue since Roth's father opened it 35 years ago. Roth says he is repairing the restaurant's original location but has no immediate plans to reopen there. Roth also owns the Canal Boulevard tavern McNulty's Bitter End (no relation to this writer) and plans to reopen it soon as a café serving lunch only. The Steak Knife serves dinner Tuesday through Saturday.

Lining Them Up

Chinese Kitchen (3327 S. Carrollton Ave., 482-1122) is the first business to reopen in the Gert Town strip mall it calls home, but you wouldn't know it from the parking lot. The place seems to be constantly full and at peak hours the line of patrons waiting to place take-out orders snakes out the door, reaching nearly to South Carrollton Avenue. The restaurant has been in business for 30 years and after rebuilding from massive flood damage it reopened in late March. Though the place has been fantastically busy, the line for take-out orders moves swiftly and there are usually tables available in the two small dining rooms. The kitchen serves standard Chinese-American fare and bargain lunch combo plates until 5 p.m. If you go, visit early since the high demand sometimes depletes the kitchen of food before the scheduled closing time. The restaurant accepts cash only and is open for lunch and dinner Monday through Saturday.

Cochon Nominated for Beard Award

Cochon (930 Tchoupitoulas St., 588-2123; www.cochonrestaurant.com) has been nominated for the Best New Restaurant award by the James Beard Foundation (www.jamesbeard.org), a New York-based organization that promotes excellence in the culinary arts. Chef Donald Link, who opened the restaurant along with chef Stephen Stryjewski last spring, is also nominated for the foundation's award for Best Chef in the Southeast region. Link was nominated for the regional best chef award last year as well for his work at his other restaurant, Herbsaint (701 St. Charles Ave., 524-4114; www.herbsaint.com). Winners will be announced at an awards ceremony to be held in New York on May 7. Of the five other restaurants nominated for the Best New Restaurant award, three are in New York, one is in Los Angeles and one is in Las Vegas.
