Cindy Brennan, managing partner at Mr. B's Bistro, teamed with Executive Chef Michelle McRaney to write The Mr. B's Bistro Cookbook. The handsome book features appetizing photos and more than 100 recipes for favorites like barbecue shrimp, gumbo ya-ya and bread pudding with whiskey sauce. Chef McRaney offers tips on how to cook these dishes like a pro and even illustrates the stages of roux with a color photo. A Room of His Own
Josh Besh, executive chef at Restaurant August (301 Tchoupitoulas St., 299-9777; www.restaurantaugust.com) can't complain about his boss now that he bought the restaurant. Not that he had any complaints about his former partner, August 'Duke' Robin. Robin started the restaurant as an investment and always planned to sell it. Through consulting work for Campbell's Soup and Harrah's Entertainment, Besh raised the money to fulfill his dream of owning his own restaurant. To manage his newly acquired restaurant, Besh hired Lee Ingold, formerly of Peristyle, as sommelier and Octavio Mantilla, formerly at The Besh Steakhouse at Harrah's (4 Canal St., 533-6111; www.harrahs.com), as the new general manager.
Dying to Eat
It will be almost as much fun as a funeral when Gayden Metcalfe and Charlotte Hays read from their new book, Being Dead Is No Excuse: The Official Southern Ladies Guide to Hosting the Perfect Funeral (Miramax) at Beaucoup Books (3951 Magazine St., 895-2663) at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 29. The book mixes anecdotes of misbehavior at funerals in Greenville, Miss., with recipes for the tasty dishes served in the Delta when someone drops dead. The staff at Beaucoup Books will prepare recipes from the book to serve during the reading.
On Saturday, March 26, the Crescent City Farmers Market (700 Magazine St.; www.crescentcityfarmersmarket.org) will sponsor a cookbook and gardening book swap. Beyond the bartering, Octavia Books will sell new cookbooks and Newcomb College's Center for Women will display rare and unusual books. At 10 a.m., watch Poppy Tooker, cooking teacher and local leader of the Slow Food movement (www.slowfoodusa.org), prepare something tasty at the Chefs Corner.
