Real Food, Real People
Real Men Cook for Charity is one of the more intriguing ways to celebrate Father's Day (June 15). This 14th annual national event, now in its fifth year in New Orleans, is a culinary approach to providing youths with strong adult role models. This year's event, which will be held from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday at the Morris F.X. Jeff Municipal Auditorium, features guest chef John Besh of Restaurant August. He will be joined by celebrity guests/hosts Michael Lewis and Danté Stallworth of the New Orleans Saints as well as Chuck Wiley of the Minnesota Vikings (along with his father, naturally). They all will provide food samples, while younger participants will also get a chance to meet positive role models and potential mentors. The event is co-presented locally by 100 Black Men of Metro New Orleans. Advance tickets are $20 adults, $10 children, and are available by calling 392-8174, 621-8174 or toll-free (866) 469-8497 or by going online at www.TicketAnnex.com. So you think you're hooked on certain types of food? You're not alone -- or wrong, necessarily. Nutrition researcher Dr. Neal Barnard, author of Breaking the Food Seduction (St. Martin's Press), will present a lecture on this very subject on June 16 at East Jefferson General Hospital, Esplanade rooms 1 and 2, at 4200 Houma Blvd. in Metairie. The lecture begins at 7 p.m. "It's not a lack of willpower that keeps us tied to certain foods, but biochemistry," Barnard explains in a news release. "With the right dietary and lifestyle accommodations, we can kick the strongest food cravings." Free admission.
As we celebrate both our Summer Restaurant Guide as well as our new summer wine reviews section in this issue, it's a good time to note two June grape-related events presented by Martin Wine Cellar. The ninth annual wine-tasting "Once Upon a Vine: An Event of Divine Taste," will be held from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday, June 8, at City Park's Pavilion of the Two Sisters. More than 200 wines from around the world will be available for tasting. Tickets are $60; they include a $10 gift certificate toward a purchase at either Martin's location (3827 Baronne St., and 714 Elmeer Ave. in Metairie). Next up, Martin hosts another wine tasting, "Summer Sippers," from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. June 26 at the Uptown location. A wide variety of wines will be paired with a selection of treats. Tickets are $30, with $5 going to a gift certificate for a future Martin's purchase.
